How @everyone is Making You Lose Followers.

Last week, I started following a local business's Facebook page. In record time, I unfollowed them.

A black and white image shows a crowd of people.

The spam notifications from them were unreal. Twice a day, everyday, I was receiving an @everyone notification from this business to notify me on a 'new item' they'd received in their inventory (they were a liquidation store; I assume they buy pallets of returned goods from Amazon, etc. then sells them on aftermarket). It's a shame, because I'd love to follow them and get a good steal - but not at the price for all of those spam notifications.

It's a spam-eat-spam world, and now more than ever it's hard for small businesses to get organic views from their followers. Tools like the ‘@everyone’ tag have become increasingly popular for businesses; at first glance, it seems like a convenient way to grab your followers' attention and ensure that your message reaches them instantly. However, as with any tool, its effectiveness is only as good as its use—and in this case, overuse can lead to serious consequences.

Here’s why business owners need to stop using the ‘@everyone’ tag so freely, and how doing so can help them retain followers, maintain engagement, and nurture a stronger online community.

What is the ‘@everyone’ Tag?

For those unfamiliar, the ‘@everyone’ tag allows you to notify all members of a group or server simultaneously. Originally popularized on platforms like Discord, it has now spread across various online spaces, including Facebook groups and business communities. When used, the tag sends a notification to every single person in the group, regardless of whether or not they want to receive the alert.

This might sound like a surefire way to get your message across, but it can easily become intrusive if not used wisely.

The Pitfalls of Overusing the ‘@everyone’ Tag

As tempting as it may be to get a one-click solution to reach your audience, overusing this tag can actually backfire.

  1. Notification Fatigue Everyone has experienced it: the constant pinging of notifications. Whether it’s your email inbox, social media, or messaging apps, the sheer volume of alerts can feel overwhelming. When businesses rely on the ‘@everyone’ tag for non-essential updates, followers may become fatigued by the frequency of notifications and start ignoring them altogether—or worse, muting or unfollowing your page.

  2. Loss of Trust and Respect The ‘@everyone’ tag demands immediate attention. Overusing it for trivial updates like product announcements, sales, or non-urgent company news dilutes its power. Followers will begin to view your messages as spammy and disrespectful of their time, rather than valuable communication. As trust erodes, engagement decreases. Once you've lost someone's respect, it's difficult to win it back.

  3. Risk of Losing Followers Social media is about building community, but overusing tags like ‘@everyone’ can feel more like broadcasting than engaging. When followers feel overwhelmed by constant notifications, they might opt out by unfollowing your business entirely. A mass exodus of followers can hurt your brand reputation and lower your visibility online, especially as algorithms reward higher engagement rates.

When Should You Use the ‘@everyone’ Tag?

While you should avoid using the ‘@everyone’ tag regularly, there are occasions when it is appropriate and even necessary. Consider it an “emergency-only” tool, reserved for critical updates that truly affect your audience. Here are a few scenarios where using the tag makes sense:

  • Service Interruptions or Major Technical Issues: If your website is down or there’s a critical issue affecting a large portion of your audience, notifying everyone immediately is reasonable.

  • Urgent Safety Alerts: If there’s an emergency—such as a weather event that impacts your business’s location or physical operations—using the ‘@everyone’ tag can help ensure your customers and followers are informed.

  • Time-Sensitive Announcements: In rare cases, you might have a limited-time opportunity or event that genuinely benefits everyone in your community. For example, a flash sale with only a few hours left might warrant an urgent notification, but this should still be used sparingly.

Alternatives to the ‘@everyone’ Tag

Instead of leaning on the ‘@everyone’ tag, consider other, less intrusive ways to communicate with your audience. These strategies can help you maintain engagement while respecting your followers' time and attention.

  1. Segmented Messaging: Not every update is relevant to your entire audience. By segmenting your audience—whether through email marketing lists, social media tools, or customer groups—you can tailor your messages to those who are most likely to be interested. This approach allows you to send highly relevant content to smaller groups without bombarding everyone with notifications.

  2. Event-Based Notifications: Many platforms now offer event-based notifications, where followers can choose to be alerted about specific events, product launches, or sales. Encourage your community to opt-in for notifications that matter to them. This way, they’ll receive updates on their own terms, and you avoid being perceived as intrusive.

  3. Pinned Posts and Announcements: Rather than tagging everyone in a post, use pinned posts or announcement features to highlight important updates. Pinned posts stay at the top of your page, ensuring visibility without triggering a notification for every follower. Followers can check the information when they’re ready, creating a less disruptive experience.

  4. Push Notifications and SMS Marketing: If you need to get time-sensitive information to a specific group of customers, consider using push notifications or SMS marketing. These channels are more personal and direct, and because they require explicit opt-in, followers are more likely to appreciate the messages they receive.

  5. Live Streams and Events: Rather than spamming everyone with notifications, leverage the power of live streams and events to make important announcements. Followers who are truly interested will tune in, and you’ll create a stronger sense of community by engaging with them in real time.

The Long-Term Impact of Respecting Your Followers’ Attention

In today’s noisy digital landscape, attention is currency. The more you respect your followers’ time and attention, the more valuable your brand will become to them. By reserving the ‘@everyone’ tag for emergencies and finding more thoughtful ways to communicate, you’ll nurture a loyal, engaged audience who trusts your business and genuinely values the content you share.

Ultimately, it’s about playing the long game. While it might seem like a good idea to get everyone’s attention at once, the reality is that fostering authentic connections and delivering relevant, targeted updates will always win over aggressive tactics. Give your audience a reason to stay—not a reason to leave.
